Homeopathy in dentistry:
a natural complement
Peter Varley BDS, FDSRCS, DDHom
Modern dentistry is an exciting and rapidly changing
science. Minimum intervention is the catchphrase of the moment
as is applying a natural approach to general dental practice. These
new discoveries in dental science enable us to develop our daily
work in this direction.

Homeopathy
Peter Varley BDSc, FDSRCS, DFHom(Dent.) and
Richard Fischer DDS, FAGD.
Homeopathy is a medical system that enjoys a long and rich heritage
of scientific literature and a worldwide reputation for safe and
effective therapeutics. Although its basic tenets go back to Paracelsus
and Hippocrates.

Nutrition
Peter Varley BDSc, FDSRCS, DFHom(Dent.) and
Ron Ehrlich BDS.
Nutrition is a new science and there is still discussion about
which foods we should eat and in which combinations for maximum
benefit. There are many theories about diet and many of these are
frequently revised.

Chiropractic
Peter Varley BDSc, FDSRCS, DFHom(Dent.)
and Jonathan Howat DC(USA), FICS.
Chiropractic was founded in 1895 by Dr Palmer in the USA. It is
now the largest natural healing profession in the world. It uses
the inherent recuperative powers of the body for the maintenance
of health through the normal balance of the nervous system and
the spinal, muscular and skeletal structures.

Applied Kinesiology
Peter Varley BDSc, FDSRCS, DFHom(Dent.) and Joseph Shafer DC (USA), DIBAK, CCSP.
Applied kinesiology originated in the United States in the late
1950's through the clinical observations of George Goodheart D.C.
Because he was a chiropractor, his education prepared him to look
primarily at problems related to the spine and the way it affected
the nervous system.

Acupuncture
Peter Varley BDSc, FDSRCS, DFHom(Dent.) and Simon Hayhoe MBBS, LRCP,
MRCS, DA, FICAE.
Acupuncture is used to some extent in the majority of hospital
pain clinics and many general medical practitioners include it
in their armamentarium. For most people however, there still seems
to be a psychological chasm between Western medical logic and mediaeval
Chinese theory.

Mercury Toxicity
Peter Varley BDSc, FDSRCS, DFHom(Dent.) and Jack Levenson LDSRCS(Edin).
Given the very large human exposure to mercury, how poisonous is
it? The University of Tennessee has a renowned toxicity centre
where they grade poisons based upon the least amount necessary
to kill a human. Plutonium is the most deadly and is rated on
the scale as 1900.

Hypnosis
Peter Varley BDSc, FDSRCS, DFHom(Dent.) and Geoff Graham BDS.
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness in which the imagination

Suggestions are therefore accepted more readily and acted upon
more easily.

Voice Therapy
Peter Varley BDSc, FDSRCS, DFHom(Dent.) and Angela Caine LRAM, AGSM
There is a significant relationship between TMD and voice dysfunction.
Many of the ligaments and muscles responsible for voice production
are also responsible for the forces which move the jaw. It is unlikely
that most dentists have considered the voice to be within the realm
of dental treatment. It is even more unlikely that someone who
sings out of tune or suffers recurring voice loss would consult
a dentist.

Holistic
Practice
Peter Varley BDS, FDSRCS, DDHom and Stuart Ferraris BChD, DGDP, DDFHom.
We can all use complementary therapies in our
practice, but like anything new, we need the time and energy to
learn. This can add dimension to the postgraduate programmes we
use to support our every day orthodox therapies.

Fear of the Dentist
Peter Varley BDS, FDSRCS, DDHom.
It is our aim through a column in this Journal to inform you,
the patient, of the way in which Homeopathy and other alternative
therapies can be used in dentistry. To help you find a Homeopathic
dentist and to touch on those areas of holistic dentistry in which
the homeopathic patient may be interested.

Should Fluoride be added to the drinking water
Peter Varley BDS, FDSRCS, DDHom.
Fluoridation is another controversy. The first criticism of adding
fluoride to the water supply, which has been occurring through
the Western world over the last 50 years, is that it is impossible
to accurately determine dosage as people consume varying amounts
of water.
